I got to read with Barbara Henning last month in D.C. and brought home her book A Day Like Today. Here’s the beginning of the poem “I Wake Up Late,” to which I am grateful for introducing me to the artist Rosemary Mayer, who turns out to be the sister of Bernadette Mayer!
I wake up late and groggy
looking around the room
at Rosemary Mayer’s
orange and yellow circles.
They pair off and make
circles within circles, a chain
of duets. How close we once
were, luck, lady duck, that piece
of high desert drift wood
from the Coyote wilderness.
Lewis’s collages, hours clipping
and pasting the letter O.
You can follow the process
as the outer blue circles
float above…..
