From Ruth Thompson: Bubble pretties

Enjoying Ruth Thompson’s new book, Whale Fall & Black Sage. “Whale Fall” refers to a biological phenomenon–the enormous boon of nutrients that a deceased whale provides to other sea creatures, a drifting feast that slowly descends toward the ocean floor.

Here’s a favorite passage from Ruth’s poem “Chorus of the Slow Worms”:

We say me.

Just like you up there,

you pretties–

you eye, you ear, you gill-lung-up-there-bubble pretties–

we say Me Me Me Me Me Me Me.

(You bubble pretties, you eat light?

You sing while you can.)
