Season of the eight-leggeds

As usual in late summer here, spiders are festooning the known world with their spindly doings.

I find webs not only in such picturesque places but also inside kitchen cupboards, between windowpanes, and inside the plunger of the coffee press. On dewy mornings certain closely-trimmed shrubs are decorated with webs as perfectly spaced as Christmas bulbs. Fields brim with backlit cups, so numerous that it seems any insect would be crazy to attempt a thru-flight.

As I write this a spider is busily constructing tonight’s web right outside, between the window screen and the rose of Sharon. I can’t see the strands, so the spider appears to be bouncing and crawling around in space, unsupported.
